The Road Ahead

Two Car Talk podcasts and a few Radio Labs and I think I’m closing in on the New Mexico border. West Texas runs on and on as the epitome of the Lone Star State – vast, lonely and refusing to end.

When my proposal for a new league went live on November 30, I wrote that I’d be embarking on “a cross-country road trip to meet with, discuss and listen to as many members from each team as possible about the League”.

Three weeks later and I’ve driven more than 6,000 miles in the last 15 days, fell victim to a Wyoming snowstorm and met with 14 of the 18 teams in my proposal. I’m on my way to Christmas in California’s Coachella Valley before my final meetings with Revolver on the 27th and Sockeye and Furious both on the 29th. (Southpaw was unavailable to meet.)

I start every meeting the same. “I do what I do because I’m passionate about increasing access to elite ultimate,” I say reading the black text on the first of 27 white slides.

If my proposal answers the whos, whats and wheres, then my presentation deals mainly with the whys and hows. The next two to four hours is then spent discussing the reasons this proposal is important and laying out the league’s path towards existence and success.

It’s more information than I can possible fit into a single blog post, so I’ll have to jump straight to the what’s next portion of my presentation. There are three steps involved in the creation of a league as outlined in my proposal.

  1. By January 1st – Teams sign a letter of intent with me declaring their interest in my format and continuing the formation process.
  2. By March 1st – Sign another letter of intent formally bringing all teams, outside investors and NexGen together on one document and confirm that all the elements needed for a successful league are present.
  3. By March 31st – Sign the league into existence.

This is only an outline and I look forward to the many conversations and discussions that will continue to be had. Feel free to leave any questions in the comments section and I’ll answer them when I get off the road.
